    High School Internships – An Overview


    High school internships
    are available for high school students in a range of fields, from fashion and finance to computer technologies and sports. High school internships are usually offered the summer. The students should be at least 15 years of age to become eligible for internship programs.

    High school internships offer an excellent opportunity to motivated high school students to enter a professional work environment. These programs are usually offered during summer; hence the students can spend their summer wisely. Semester long internship programs are also available. These programs require the students to have early release from school.

    Types of High School Internships

    High school internships are either paid or unpaid. Aquarium, laboratories, research centers and tech centers offer internship programs for high school students. Internship offered by Aquarium offers young people a chance to learn about marine species and aquarium operations. Students completing this internship can pursue a career in marine science and related fields. Summer internship programs usually last for five weeks.

    Internship programs offered by laboratories provide high school students with an opportunity to perform physics laboratory work. Students who have strong interests in physics, math, chemistry and engineering can apply for this program. Paid internships are available in summer and unpaid internships are available throughout the year. Unpaid internships offered by laboratories help the students get academic credit. Selected interns will be given one week training to work in labs.

    Cancer research centers provide a chance to high school students to discover new knowledge in biological sciences, stem cell and bone marrow transplantation and epidemiology by participating in various research activities.

    Internships offered by Tech centers help the students to gain some basic technical skills. The interns get an insight into high tech professions. They work on challenging projects that will encourage them to pursue a career in the field of technology.

    The average salary received by high school students is around $1600 for a six week term.

    Companies Offering High School Internships

    • Microsoft offers internships that offer interns a chance to work on avant-garde technology. The summer internship program lasts for 10 weeks and is a paid one. The students get a chance to meet with technologists who are the master minds behind Windows 8, Xbox 360 and Bing.
    • NASA offers high school internship programs for 9 to 12 grade students with a minimum of 2.5 academic GPA. The students can learn by participating in online discussion boards, chats, blogs and individual and team activities. Design competitions will be arranged to prepare the students for their future and to provide a lot of information about NASA opportunities.
    • Woods Hole Science Aquarium offers high school internships, which train students to work with professional staff to care for their marine animals. The students can participate in seminars and meetings to gain knowledge about marine animals.
    • Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center offers internship programs for students who have completed 11th grade. The students are allowed to choose an area of interest like basic science, clinical research or vaccine and infectious disease.

    High school internships help students to get an idea of real professional environment. In addition to learning numerous things, they can even get paid. Though there are unpaid internships, they help them to get academic credit. The programs offer the students a chance to apply what they have learned in school and gain hands on knowledge.
