Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab Description
The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a not-for-profit center for engineering, research, and development. Located north of Washington, DC, APL is a division of one of the world's premier research universities, The Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab Full-time, Paid Responsibilities
The Human Machine Interaction section of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) researches, develops, and prototypes software for solving multi-faceted knowledge-centric engineering problems. Complex computational systems must ultimately present information to humans in a way that conveys meaning, provides a common view into complex problems, and supports decision making. APL offers paid science and engineering internships each summer. The program provides practical work experience and an introduction to APL. Students spend the summer working with APL scientists and engineers, conducting research, developing leadership skills, and growing professionally.
The data visualization engineering intern will work on developing visual representations of abstract cyber-security data and will drive user experience design (Ux) efforts by creating software that interfaces with underlying systems. They will work with the machine interfaces engineering staff on a multi-disciplinary team. The intern will create software that provides compelling and useful data visualization, that allows for visualization manipulation, and that helps control underlying software systems.
