Story and Research Internship

6021 SE 72ND AVE.

Application Deadline: Closed
Timeframe: 02/08/16 — 04/04/16

Dawson Media Group Description

Dawson Media Group is a Portland-based media production company that specializes in content-driven work such as educational media, programs for libraries and museums, professional development, and documentaries. We are located in Portland near SE Woodstock and 72nd Ave.

We have openings for an intern to work on storylines and research: Researching online for story ideas, making preliminary contact to further research potential subjects; presenting the ideas to our producers; completing additional research as directed to support proposal and story development. This intern will also attend production meetings and see how story ideas work their way through to acceptance, and provide support for the creation of treatments for submission for client approval.

The stories are for a series of mini-documentaries, showing everyday people around the US who are “pushing their limits”. In each case, the main character is—knowingly or otherwise—using science, technology, engineering or math in their pursuit of their dreams. Some will focus on people who have found ways to adapt to climate change affecting their lives. The series will be used as part of programs for adults, implemented in public libraries across the US and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

This is a wonderful hands-on project and resume builder, and opportunity for students who wish to enter the fields of film/video production, library science, adult education, informal education fields (e.g. museum educator), documentary production, journalism, or fields related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). For examples of past stories in the series, see the Human Interest Videos on these pages:

Learning experiences may also include location searches, and general administrative assistance to the producer and production coordinator. We offer a learning opportunity that stresses professionalism and attention to detail

Dawson Media Group Part-time, Unpaid Responsibilities

While learning the tasks already described, the intern will be completing extensive online research, making phone calls, collecting and organizing search results in documents and spreadsheets, writing story ideas, and verbally providing regular updates and ideas to supervisors. The work will all be in our offices, with a possibility of a small amount being completed via telecommuting.

Dawson Media Group Part-time, Unpaid Requirements

In the interest of providing a meaningful experience, we require that interns are working with us at least 10 hours per week, for at least 8 weeks. All applicants must have at least basic proficiency in MS word and Excel.

This is a non-paying internship and candidates must be enrolled in or about to begin an educational program related to the internship. We will work with your school's credit requirements.

In your cover letter or accompanying text please tell us (1) your immediate and long range learning and career goals as they relate to this internship (2) the date range during which you wish to begin and end the internship and (3) if you will be receiving academic credit for the internship, an (4) that you understand this is an unpaid internship. ANY RESPONSES THAT DO NOT ADDRESS ALL OF THESE ISSUES MAY NOT BE CONSIDERED.
